It was a day of extremes for the softball team in the opening day of the Blues City Classic Friday in Memphis as the Raiders defeated Tennessee State 9-1 in the first game before falling to Louisiana Tech by the same score.
The WSU offense came out strong against Tennessee State, starting with four runs in the first. RBI singles by Macy Cook and Alexis Mayle drove in the first two runs while Libby Pfeffer being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Mayle scoring on a passed ball accounted for the other two runs.
The Tigers answered with a run in the bottom of the first before Wright State added two more in the second. Back-to-back doubles by Macey Gunther and Vivi Marquez resulted in the first run and a Becka Peterson single knocked in Marquez with the second.
Ashton Salyers stole home in the fifth to make it 7-1 and the Raiders rounded out the scoring with two in the sixth, one coming on a RBI single from Jordan Kennaw.
Ally Russell (1-0) earned the win, scattering four hits and a walk while striking out six. At the plate, Peterson had three hits while Gunther, Marquez, Cook and Kennaw had two each.
In the second game, Louisiana Tech took control early with five runs in the first, two in the second and another in the third. The lone Raider run came in the third as Salyers scored on a passed ball.
Wright State (3-10) continues tournament play on Saturday against Belmont (10:00 Eastern) and host Memphis (4:45).
