The Wright State volleyball team could not overcome three Western Michigan 7-0 runs as the Broncos defeated the Raiders in three sets Friday in the opening match of the Flyer Classic at the Frericks Center. WMU won the match 25-17, 25-16, 25-13.
It was all Western Michigan early as the Broncos scored the first seven points of the match, including two kills each from Stephenee Yancy and Claire Gerwig. Wright State hung close in the second set, only trailing 18-16 following a Marisa Aiello kill, only to see WMU go on another 7-0 run to close out the set.
The Raiders scored the first three points of the final set, including kills by Aiello and Ellen Senf, and led 4-1 on a Stephanie Ruffing kill before the Broncos went on their final 7-0 burst to take the lead for good.
Western Michigan finished with a 44-29 kill advantage and outhit WSU .323-.070.
Heidi Splinter led the way for the Raiders with eight kills and added 10 digs while Emily Meng had 25 assists and Miranda Puthoff 17 digs.
Wright State (6-9) continues play in the Flyer Classic on Saturday as the Raiders take on Western Kentucky at 5:00. The Hilltoppers received votes in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll.
