The Wright State baseball team nearly rallied back from a 6-0 deficit, but fell just short as UIC held on for a 10-8 Horizon League victory Friday night at Nischwitz Stadium.
The Flames scored five times in the second, the big blow being a grand slam home run to left by John Coen, and added another in the fourth to go up 6-0.
WSU, though, started on its comeback with a run in the fifth on a Sam Picchiotti RBI single and added another in the sixth as Picchiotti drove in John Brodner with a sacrifice fly.
UIC extended the lead back out to 8-2 with two in the seventh, only to see the Raiders answer with two of their own in the bottom of the frame on a two-run home run to left off the bat of Jeff Limbaugh, his fourth of the season.
The Flames again scored two in the eighth and those turned out to be the final difference as Wright State would close the deficit to 10-8 with four in the bottom of the inning. Kody Krizman accounted for the first run with a single to right to plate Picchiotti and Mark Fowler later doubled to the gap in right center to drive in Krizman and Garrett Gray. Fowler came in to score the fourth run on a Brodner hit through the left side.
Justin Kopale followed with a walk to load the bases, but a strikeout ended the threat and WSU left a runner on first in the ninth.
Brodner finished with three hits to pace the Raider offense while Krizman, Fowler and Limbaugh each had two hits to go with two RBI.
Wright State(22-27, 9-11 Horizon) and UIC (25-26, 12-11 Horizon) close out the regular season Saturday with the final game of the series starting at 2:00. The Raiders will honor their seven seniors--Gray, Casey Henn, Tanner Howell, Kopale, Cody Kopilchack, Krizman and Picchiotti--following the contest.
