Softball Edges Past UIC 1-0

A bunt single by Lindsay Barrett drove in Kacie Rapshus with the only run of the game in the seventh inning as the Wright State softball team held on for a 1-0 win over top seed and host UIC in the Horizon League winner's bracket semifinals on Thursday.

The Raiders posed a major threat in the first, loading the bases on a Hanna Floyd single and walks to Rapshus and Taylor Knore, but Flames pitcher Devon Miller struck out Reagan Stofcheck to keep the game scoreless.

UIC had two runners on base in the second, third and fourth innings, only to see WSU pitcher Krystian DeWitt escape all three jams to maintain the 0-0 deadlock until the decisive seventh.

Rapshus started the winning rally with a hit along the left field line and after advancing to second on a Knore bunt, Stofcheck had a sharp single to center to put runners on first and third.

That brought Barrett to the plate and she laid a perfect bunt between Miller and home plate for a hit that drove in Rapshus with the winning run.

UIC had two runners reach base with two outs in the seventh, but DeWitt completed the shutout as she retired Kara Komp on a grounder to short.

DeWitt (14-13) scattered five hits in pitching her third shutout of the season, walking four and striking out three.

Wright State (19-35) will face Youngstown State, a 2-0 winner over Loyola in the other semifinal, in the winner's bracket finals at 2:30 Eastern Friday afternoon.  The winner advances to the championship on Saturday.
