Down 15 at the break, the Wright State women's basketball started the second half with a 27-7 run and then scored six straight points in the final minute to pull out a 66-65 win at Xavier Saturday afternoon.
The difference was just three following a Kim Demmings three-pointer with 12:16 to go in the first half, but Xavier followed with a 13-4 run over the next four minutes to go up 30-18 at the eight-minute mark. WSU closed the gap to 34-26 on another Demmings three before the Musketeers scored the final seven points of the period to take a 41-26 halftime lead.
Xavier shot 53 percent from the field in the first half, including four of eight three-pointers, while Wright State shot just 35 percent despite going five of 10 from behind the arc.
The Xavier lead was 45-31 before the Raiders scored 18 straight points over a 4:21 span, 10 of those coming from KC Elkins, to go up 49-45 with 12:55 remaining. A Kayla Lamotte layup gave WSU its biggest lead of the day at 53-48 with 10:22 left, only to see the Musketeers answer with eight in a row to regain the advantage at 56-53.
Down 60-57, a Demmings three-point play with 2:16 to go tied it and after Xavier went back in front with two free throws, another three-point play by the sophomore guard with 57.1 seconds left put Wright State ahead for good at 63-62.
After Demmings forced a steal on Xavier's next possession, she made one of two at the line at the 15.9-second mark to make it a two-point game.
Taylor Stanton then made it a two-possession game as after she gathered in the defensive rebound on a miss by the Musketeers, she hit two foul shots with 4.7 seconds left. That proved to be the difference as Xavier's Amber Gray connected on a three at the buzzer.
The Raiders shot 39 percent for the game and were nine of 19 from three-point range while the Musketeers shot just 27 percent the final 20 minutes to finish at 39 percent for the contest. WSU was 13 of 26 at the foul line compared to nine of 13 for Xavier.
